Introduction to the Exceptional Child

Exceptional Child Course Overview

The Exceptional Child Course is a 50-hour virtual, self-paced asynchronous course designed to provide currently employed educators with foundational knowledge and practical strategies for working with exceptional learners. This course supports participants in developing the skills necessary to identify, instruct, and adapt curriculum for students with diverse learning needs.

This course equips educators with the tools needed to:
  • Recognize characteristics of students with disabilities and gifted learners
  • Implement effective instructional strategies and accommodations
  • Modify curriculum to ensure equitable access to learning
Standards Alignment
This course satisfies the certification requirements outlined by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) under Rule 505-2-24 Special Georgia Requirements for the Identification and Education of Exceptional Children. It does not count towards renewal credit hours for certificate renewal.

Certification Requirement
Completion of the Exceptional Child Course is required for the issuance of certification in the following fields:
  • Teaching (instructional) certification fields
  • Leadership fields
  • Certain service fields, specifically: Media Specialist and School Counseling
Credit
Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion. Upon successful completion, the participant`s certificate will be submitted to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) after the instructor notifies CSRA RESA of completion.

Refund Policy
No refunds will be issued once a participant is enrolled and has started the Canvas course.

Suggested Timeline
Participants are encouraged to complete the course within 4 to 6 weeks of enrollment. To ensure timely processing and reporting, all coursework should be completed prior to the CSRA RESA closing deadline.

Schedule Notice
CSRA RESA observes a summer closure period each year from mid-June through mid-July. During this time, enrollment processing, instructor support, and communication may be limited or delayed. Participants are encouraged to plan accordingly to ensure timely course completion.

Registration & Enrollment
New registrations are not accepted during the summer closure period. Once registration is complete and payment has been submitted and received by CSRA RESA, please allow up to 3 business days for enrollment into the course. If you have not received an email invitation to begin the course within this timeframe, please contact exceptional@csraresa.org for assistance.
