Ruby Payne’s Emotional Poverty |
Description: |
• What is emotional poverty? It is when the brain is unintegrated and unregulated, when the bonding and attachment is not secure, and the inner self is under-developed. Why is this important? Increasingly schools are dealing with more students who are angry, anxious and tending to violence (particularly at PK and K). This is taking significant time away from learning. The typical discipline strategies are only working with about half of the students because many of the behavior issues have very deep emotional roots. This 2-day workshop will provide strategies, understandings of the causes and sources, and vocabulary. In addition, the workshop will help educators identify early the most probable sources of violence so that interventions can begin much earlier. The "emotional dance" in the classroom will also be named and discussed. |

Innovative Vocabulary Strategies that Work |
Description: |
Vocabulary knowledge and comprehension are like glue in that together they hold the meaning of a text together. Research indicates that a reader must know “90 to 95 percent” of the words in a text to fully comprehend its meaning (Hirsch, 2003 as quoted by Sedita, 2005). Further, lacking a well-developed bank of vocabulary will be detrimental to secondary students as they are asked to read and comprehend challenging texts. So, as secondary teachers, how can we provide students with the skills needed to tackle the vocabulary found in nonfiction and fiction texts? What are best practices to implement as we assist students in building a rich vocabulary that will increase their reading comprehension? Join us as we delve in a variety of new strategies to answer these questions. This deep dive will offer several different but highly effective and engaging approaches to the study of vocabulary.
Participants are asked to bring a fully charged laptop or tablet to the session. |

Second Nature: Writing Implementation in the Classroom |
Description: |
As we continue to move into an everchanging and fast-paced world, the ability to express our ideas, argue a point, or create an imaginary place through the written (or typed) word has become a measuring stick for success. Consider this – does writing take place in your classroom naturally or is it a task that many students dread because they are uncomfortable with written expression? Creating a sense of comfort and safety with written expression for many students is needful. How do we as secondary teachers establish that safe space for writing? How can we as secondary teachers encourage writing, so it becomes a natural, easy, and expected part of class? Join us in this session as we provide secondary teachers with approaches to writing that ease the concerns of those students who struggle to write due to a fear of failure or lack of interest. As we all know, writing should become second nature in our classrooms.

Media Specialists Collaborative Aligning Picture Books and Trade Books |
Description: |
Mrs. Jennifer Newton (Thomson High School) will be coordinating this meeting for the group. Our focus for this meeting is exciting! Our overarching goal will be to align picture books and trade books to 6-12th grade content area standards and determine their literary devices, themes, and other important identifying information in order to build our own libraries and help the teachers in our building access quality titles for their content. Each participant will need to bring a list of excellent picture books/trade books that your library currently owns. Together, this group will align the books to appropriate grade levels, Georgia Standards of Excellence, and literary devices. While we would like to primarily focus on 6-12th grades because it is an area of need, this does not mean we cannot also align these titles to K-5th grade standards as well. We will need elementary school media specialists to help recommend titles and determine the important identifying information for each text and middle and high school media specialists to work on the alignment. This work will not only benefit each of our districts but could be a resource for all schools in Georgia! |

Reading: DEAR to my Heart? |
Description: |
Do we need to drop everything and read? Oh, DEAR. We certainly hope not – the dropping of everything – that is. The text whether nonfiction or fiction – no matter the form or genre – is the foundation for our lessons. Everything we do in our classrooms connects to the text. So, yes, reading is dear to our hearts; however, you cannot just “drop everything.” What about vocabulary? What about writing? What about comprehension? What about discussion? What about the many skills that must be addressed when reading a text? Reading of the text is simply the starting point, the foundation, the door. During this session, we engage in creative reading strategies that will lead students to comprehension of the text without having to drop everything to read. We would dearly love to have you join us!

Virtual Language as a Missing Link: Introduction to a Toolkit to Enhance Engagement Language and Literacy with Emily Rubin |
Description: |
Language development dramatically and positively impacts life outcomes. Conversely, the failure to develop a capacity for effective communication jeopardizes emotional and mental well-being as well as literacy and academic success. Research demonstrates that one of the most powerful predictors of literacy outcomes is a child's language development in the early years AND the early grades. By the end of elementary school, 61 percent of students with typical language development achieve the expected standard in literacy compared to only 15 percent of those without. Language is also vital to the use of one’s inner dialogue, required to reason effectively, regulate emotions, cope with everyday challenges, and have a demonstrated protective effect on child and adolescent mental health. If we invest proactively, language development becomes an opportunity to enhance emotional well-being and quality of life. This workshop will introduce a freely accessible toolkit designed for individuals, practitioners, and policymakers to employ practices that apply language as a well-being indicator to improve educational, mental health, and well-being outcomes. |
